 DEMOCRACY SMILES AT NIGERIANS AGAIN

The smile of democracy in Nigeria again has the final responsibility for good government, fairness and freedom rests on the individual citizens to determine the best state of the society for themselves. Thus citizens will get the type of government and society they deserve through their votes.

Therefore, the democracy smiles with intelligence of showing a high degree of understanding. This means that a citizen must hold his views, opinions and beliefs with understanding that involves the constant attempts and efforts of seeking and acquiring knowledge and the truth. No good citizen believes any opinion or view without finding out the why and wherefore of the views.

Moreso, an intelligent use of the vote is very essential in a democracy. The electors must show in the way they vote that they are capable of wise judgement. They must show that they cannot be influenced by sectional or any selfish motives.

Thus it is a very dangerous thing to refuse or neglect to vote at elections. It amounts to casting your vote for dictatorship and kleptomaniac. This is because you have no confidence in your judgement.

The citizens must show an interest in public affairs. He must show to a governor who is full of himself without good sense of welfarism towards the state that he is neither a sheep, a goat nor somebody who lives by food alone through voting with their good conscience.

It is not the duty of the citizen to offer or receive bribes. Bribes make it impossible for justice to be carried out fairly. Bribes include not only the giving of money or presents to someone. It includes any action, word or anything done to obtain something which is not your right.

However, a democracy also smiles with courage that is ability or strength to uphold the deals. It is the strength to say or do what you believe reasonably to be the right thing. A citizen must have the courage to oppose himself when he is going wrong that is to refuse to satisfy a desire which he believes to be wrong whatever the immediate pain or pleasure it brings. A citizen must be courageous to expose any evil if he believes that by doing so he is helping to maintain justice,  law and order. It is courage to do this no matter who is involved in the evil.

A democracy substantially smiles at Nigerians again is to blow in good leaders, representatives and to remove the bad ones through their votes in this gubernatorial and state house of assembly elections.
