THE INDIVIDUAL IN NIGERIAN DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY

The chances of a electoral malpractice are very narrow indeed in Nigeria. The arrangements, practices, procedure and institution ensured, guaranteed, contained or implied in Nigerian Constitution are such as to make a electoral malpractice impossible. Nigeria has well organized political parties capable of democratic government and vigilant opposition in Nigeria that has lived long enough under such electoral system to know its value. Now, the citizens are vigilant and appeared to retain their freedoms and rights which are entrenched in the Constitution.

There are individuals in the Nigerian democratic society who seem to have different points of view towards democracy in Nigeria in such a way that democracy itself in the country is not truly practicing due to clannish interest used in systematising the pattern of the government.

Therefore, a democracy believes in the ability of the individual in association with the others to think, reason and determine what is good and desirable. A democracy has faith and trust in the opinion and judgement of the individual. Various means and institutions have therefore been devised to ascertain the opinion and judgement.

These include regular, free and fair elections through which an unpopular government could be changed. A democracy leaves a very large area of activity to the individual and groups of individuals. The state initiates and performs only those activities which are for all reasons, beyond the reasonable capacity of the individual or group of individuals.

However, some individuals or group of individuals that place their support in dictatorship have very little to think, reason and determine what is good and desirable. Their opinion and judgement are not anything to go by very few means and institutions are provided for the purpose of ascertaining the opinion and judgement. Such things as elections therefore do not arise or are not free and fair. An unpopular government cannot therefore be changed through constitutional means. Revolutions and bloodshed are therefore common in dictatorships.

Such that other institutions as a free press, an independent judiciary and others are non-existent even if they are existing are not totally free to practicing. The government controls all. The scope of individual activities is limited. The government tries to do everything all in line. Those who try to think for themselves and criticize the government are put into prison indefinitely and without trial. The main objective of a dictatorship is to drill and discipline the citizens into obedience.

While those believe in democracy have proven that countries where the arrangements, constitutions, the practices and the working of the government are such that the individual rights, freedoms and worth are ensured and guaranteed and the value referred to as democracies. In a democracy the rights, freedoms and the values of the individual count more than those of the government. The government exists to serve the individual and provide the conditions which makes a full and happy life possible. The government is never so strong and valuable that the individual exists to serve its purpose.

Dictatorship has become the opposite of the case, where the arrangements, constitutions, the practices and the working of the government are such that the freedom and the rights of the individual either do not exist or are not ensured and guaranteed are referred to as dictatorships. The government has become so important that it has ceased to exist for the purpose of making a happy and full life possible for the individual, rather the government is regarded as so very valuable that the individual exists to make the existence of the government possible. It often matters very little in dictatorships if the individual perish so long as the government continues in existence.
