WRITTEN BY ANOSIKE A. MERCY
Almost every institution of higher learnings, pre-marital sex is expressed among the students; they initiate it through casual friendship, embrace it and live it. This is how some students defined their own campus life in the institution of higher learnings without realizing that the society that is waiting for them is not happy about such a taboo lifestyle in the citadel of light of humanity. Simply because they are far from home where parental discipline, monitoring and control circumvent them.
This contemporary phenomenon has become prevalent in many Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education. The most trending aspect of it is the pre-marital sex among students of the institutions.
Pre-marital sex simply refers to any sexual activity before marriage. It is also an intercourse involves boy and girl before formal marriage. This act is mostly seen among students who are in higher institutions. Some will prefer cohabitation mostly the female gender, as they will prefer to save their own money then stay with their male friends. This is the reason why this act has become rampant in the institution of higher learnings.
On the premises of these, the challenge of sex before marriage have drawn concern. The rate at which students in tertiary institutions indulge in premarital sex has become so alarming in that they don't care about the effects and consequences attached to this act. We can attest that most religious dislike and do not encourage this behaviuor as it is a sin. Moreover, different cultures in our different localities also frown at this act stating that it is a taboo and never applaud such habit in the young generation. The truth remains that sex comes with its own danger and if the urge not treated well, it might destroy the beautiful future of our hope of tomorrow.
Apparently, looking at the academic aspect, students see the tertiary institutions as freedom zones where you can do what you want without minding anybody, to some they see institution of higher learnings as places you can experience romantic sexual relationship and experiment new ideas. This could result to poor academic performance of students who failed to read while others were reading and in a way to measure up they indulge in this act.
Also, family background and poor parental upbringing can also contribute to premarital sex. Most times the parents do not share quality time with their children. Some don't even stay at home at all while others manage to come back only on weekends as they will also rush back to school or their different work places. The continuous absence of parents most especially mothers will make their children behave, dress, and follow anyone they wish to hangout with. More to this, poor economic status of parents may also result to this act, when parents are not able to meet their needs most especially the females, it may lure them into premarital sex just to get what they want to, of which they wouldn't have done if they are being provided with those things. Also some parents don't care about what their children wears, teach them that indecent dressing attracts unnecessary attention by people who don't worth having them.
However, mass media despite having much advantages also have disadvantages which is trying to outshine its advantages. Pictures and videos posted in many social media handles do not only corrupt the minds of the viewers but also push them into practicing what they've seen on such media, pornography, naked pictures and dirty musical lyrics has made premarital sex reach its alarming proportion as students see it as part of life in the campus.
Strategically speaking, there is no right that justifies to engaging in pre-marital sex. The negative results extremely outshines the positive. As a result of this act students battles with unwanted pregnancy majorly the female gender which leads them to abortion or taking pills which will destroy their system and sometimes leads to death. others includes inferiority complex, depression, loss of parental support, sexual harassment, poor academic performance, contacting STIs and HIV/AIDS, and even most times commit suicide.
All in all, to escape from the above consequences, it is advisable to ABSTAIN from premarital sex. Religious bodies should educate and preach to children, youths and even adult members on the effects of premarital sex using biblical references such as 1cor 6:15, Hebrew 13:4 etc. Parents are also advised to born children as much as they can take care of, pay attention to and relate with. Create time to interact with your children, allow them to talk to you about their fear and challenges and never scare them away, make them your friend as they will always prefer staying with you rather than bad companies. Try as much as possible to satisfy their physical, material, educational and spiritual needs and most importantly pray for them.
Conclusively, sex education courses and subjects should be recommended in all institutions of learning. Sexuality programs that will help campaign against premarital sex and also provide students with accurate information about the consequences and diseases transmitted through sexual intercourse. More so, sanctions and punishments should be given to anyone who go against the principles. As the government will help fund the rally and programs for sex education enlightenment. Lastly the media and its content should be regulated, not everything should be posted in the media in order to maintain sanity, reduce and even eradicate premarital sex.
Good 👍
