NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SORTING SYNDROME IN NIGERIAN TERTIARY INSTITUTION

The increase in the proportion of sorting syndrome in the Nigerian tertiary institutions are now so alarming that I can no longer resist the urge to write this article to express concern about the situation and call the public attention to this ugly development in our tertiary education in this country.

First, the aberration and perversion of the standard of education in the Nigeria tertiary institution through sorting syndrome, engagement of students and lecturers on campuses have brought negative effects on our education.

This is so aghast and annoying towards our education in this country. However, the sorting syndrome has reduced the quality of education; the dignity and pride that associated with the education pursuit; brings lack of confidence in lecturers; and dissuades hard work among students.

Therefore, this evil called sorting in the tertiary institutions has been coronary with a kind of code-name given to the act of obtaining grades by paying money or making other kinds of gratification for grades. It is probably one of the first words students will learn on campuses because it has become so rampant to many students, it has become legal and institutionalized.

So, students do not see it as evil as the most humiliated manifestation of bribery and corruption. Due to the fact that the tertiary institution have so many indiscipline lecturers on campus, especially the younger ones and also the fact that the quality of students on our campuses have suffered a drop, there appears no end in sight to this malaise.

Consequently, our universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, etc are now fast turning into mills that produce young people who cannot fit in constructively and productively into our society or contribute significantly to the development of our nation and even give sufficient evidence about their readiness to achieve the expect designation of leaders of tomorrow.

Hence, this sorting syndrome has destabilized and made the standard of education to appear to be fallacy of imagery, causing students to be myopic in their academic pursuit. This act pitches the students against God and makes them common criminals for those that involved in such act.

In conclusion, my submission as remedies for the alarming increase of sorting syndrome in the tertiary institutions needs immediate and adequate restoration and innovation through stipulation of code of conduct or rules that will guide all the strata of academic arm and the establishment of monitoring body that will monitor and carry out discipline both on the side of lecturers and the students if they caught on such act.

Tertiary institution is the citadel of light of humanity; it must train students in knowledge and character that will standardize the students and the values of education in our society. So, that the gap in our society should be able to be occupied competently and superlatively.
